LARUE COUNTY SADDLE CLUB

THE HISTORY OF THE SADDLE CLUB

* The following is information gathered from an article published in the Larue County Herald dated July 3, 2002, by Ron Benningfield.

The LaRue County Saddle Club has been in existance since the 1950's, at that time the members met at the LaRue County Fairgrounds. They incorperated on April 3, 1961 in order to borrow the money to buy the land from Emmett Goodin, according to J.C. Brown. The 13 arces off of Goodin-Williams Road is still the home of the Saddle Club. There are at least three families that have had continual membership through four generations -the Browns, Grubbs and Tedders.

The generations include: Presley, J.C., Jimmy, and Linsey & Blake Brown; Damon, Loren, Montie Grubbs and Montie's children; Hershell, Tommy Tedder, Tommy's daughter Melissa Metcalf and her two children Montana and Stiles.

It is noted in the article that a strong 4-H horse club keeps interest high for the youth. At the time the Saddle Club allowed free access to the areana for the 4-H club, it continues to do so.

As news to me, there was a nice paragraph that mentioned the benefit shows the club had hosted for people in our community, such as tornado, fire and cancer victims, also gave funds to help a child have a kidney transplant.

After the death of a member's daughter, the club erected a playground at the Saddle Club in her honor.

One of my favorite quotes in this article came from Sharon Coffey Hornback, "And, of course, we're always at the mercy of the weather." That still holds true.
